Anyone else have life-long friends that never travel with you?

Title: Do You Have Lifelong Friends Who Never Travel With You?

Many of us cultivate friendships that span decades, and for some, travel becomes a personal passion that grows with age. I started exploring new places when I was about 19, and I’m now 26. Over the years, I’ve kept a small circle of friends from childhood who often react with enthusiasm when I share trip highlights: “Wow, that sounds amazing—I’ll have to join you next time.” Yet, they rarely, if ever, actually come along.

They’ll express a desire to travel together—“I want to go somewhere with you”—but there’s always a last-minute excuse, and eventually, they disappear from the plan. Afterward, it’s as if nothing happened; they’ll reappear asking me to jump back into a video game or another routine activity, rather than discuss real travel plans. I extend invitations to every trip, but the pattern has become so repetitive that I’ve started to stop inviting altogether.

This reality is bittersweet. It’s saddening not to have close friends who share the travel-bug with me, yet I don’t regret my choices. Solo travel has profoundly reshaped my perspective on life, pushing me to grow in ways I couldn’t have imagined. In fact, it even helped me become a monetized travel content creator.

Still, I can’t help but wonder if others have experienced a similar dynamic: friends who express interest in joining trips but never follow through, even after years of adventures and stories. If you’ve encountered this, how do you navigate the tension between pursuing your passion and maintaining those long-standing friendships?
