Creative Solo Travellers: what do you bring with you when travelling to give yourself a creative outlet?

Creative Solo Travelers: How to Maintain a Creative Outlet While on Extended Trips

Planning a long-term trip and looking to cultivate creativity without relying on screens

Long-term travel invites exploration and growth, but it can also push creative passions to the background as technology and constant connectivity make doomscrolling easy. If you’ve previously been a highly creative person, you may notice that this spark wanes when you’re constantly on the move. The challenge: how to nurture creative hobbies while traveling, without overpacking or sacrificing space in a carry-on backpack.

What I’m seeking
– Simple, portable ways to engage in creativity on the road
– Options that don’t require bringing bulky supplies
– Activities that feel enriching rather than restrictive, even in limited space

Ideas I’ve considered
– Small watercolour set and pad: Compact and lightweight, though painting isn’t a current passion for me
– Junk journaling: A potential outlet that combines writing with collage and design, but I’m concerned about space for wash tape, pens, stickers, etc.

What I’d love to hear
– Practical, low-volume creative outlets that travel well
– Tools and techniques that fit into a carry-on lifestyle
– Alternatives to traditional art media that still deliver a fulfilling creative experience

Update: What others have suggested
– Photography-focused pursuits: I already incorporate photography into my travels and am considering upgrading with a digital camera and an underwater camera for dives. I’m also exploring ideas for creative activities suitable for beach time or quiet moments at accommodations.

If you have favorite portable creative activities, equipment recommendations, or tips for keeping creative momentum while traveling, I’d greatly appreciate your insights.
