Cities interspersed with ancient ruins outside of the Mediterranean/Near East
Cities Interwoven with Ancient Ruins Beyond the Mediterranean and Near East
Rome stands as the quintessential example of this phenomenon. Within the modern city, you can encounter enduring remnants such as the Foro Romano and the Terme di Caracalla, seamlessly juxtaposed with contemporary urban life. Other sites have been repurposed across the ages, including the Pantheon and Castel Sant’Angelo, which continue to serve diverse roles while preserving their historic character.
This pattern is not limited to the Mediterranean and Near East. There are numerous instances around the world where ancient ruins are found embedded in today’s cities, revealing a long-standing dialogue between past and present. I’m seeking suggestions from regions further afield to illustrate how different cultures have integrated antiquity into their urban environments.
