Cairo vs. Marrakech: Had a bad experience in Cairo. Will Marrakech be similar?

Cairo vs. Marrakech: How Do They Compare for Tourists?

If you’ve visited both cities, I’d love to hear a direct comparison. My husband and I spent three days in Cairo last year, staying in the city center near the National Museum and visiting the pyramids. The trip was loud, chaotic, and sometimes stressful. We experienced a lot of unsolicited attention and persistent attempts to sell or scam.

For context, I’ve traveled to Egypt before and stayed relatively calm, but it was my husband’s first time in Egypt and in an Arabic-speaking country. He joined the trip as a gesture to support my long-time dream of seeing the pyramids, but the overall experience was challenging for him.

Now I’m considering Marrakech for next year. From videos I’ve seen, it appears to be very touristy, with fewer moments of overt harassment and a cleaner appearance, and I’ve noticed there’s a medina where cars aren’t allowed. However, online videos can be misleading since people often behave differently on camera, so it’s hard to gauge the full reality.

My husband isn’t firmly opposed to Marrakech, but his Cairo experience has made him cautious. I’m hopeful Marrakech could feel more relaxed, but I don’t want to push him into a trip that might be uncomfortable or unenjoyable.

So, how would you compare the two destinations? Are the levels of harassment similar, with frequent solicitations and approaches from locals? Do you feel safe in each city, and would you recommend one over the other for first-time visitors?

I’d really appreciate hearing your personal experiences and insights.
