A visit to the beautiful North Cascades in Washington

A Scenic Getaway to Washington’s North Cascades

September 14–18

I recently fulfilled a long-held wish to explore the North Cascades, a region renowned for its dramatic mountain scenery and outdoor opportunities. While fire and smoke can be a seasonal challenge, the trip offered a largely clear window with some days carrying wisps of haze. The experience highlighted how shifting weather patterns can enhance photography and outdoor adventures, turning cloud cover into atmospheric light and lending lush, rain-washed landscapes to the itinerary.

Getting There and Getting Around
I flew into Seattle and continued by car along State Route 20, eventually becoming the North Cascades Highway. The drive is exceptional, with abundant spots to pause, take in the vistas, and access a variety of short and moderate hikes directly from the roadway. The route is especially rewarding for visitors who appreciate changing light and weather conditions, which reveal new facets of the landscape on each pass.

Base Camp: Winthrop
I spent four nights in Winthrop, a small Western-style town on the eastern edge of the range. While not a refined metropolitan hub, it offered quiet, peaceful surroundings and convenient access to the highway for repeat stops to observe the mountains in different light and weather. The slower pace provided an excellent backdrop for enjoying the scenery without crowds.

Weather and Atmosphere
I approached the trip with a healthy respect for the potential for rain, fog, and cloud cover—common in high-mnow terrain. In practice, the clouds created a distinctive, moody atmosphere perfect for photography, and occasional rain contributed to vibrant greens and a refreshed look across trails and viewpoints. I saved the more expansive, panoramic hikes for days when sun returned.
