What are some one and done places that you’ve visited?
Title: One-and-Done Destinations: Places I Didn’t Feel the Need to Return To
When exploring the world, not every stop inspires a repeat visit. Here are three destinations I wouldn’t rush back to, even though I didn’t hate them overall. Each offered something unique, but I left with a sense that I’d seen enough on that trip.
1) Chiang Mai, Thailand
– What stood out: A mix of chaotic energy and cultural highlights, with the old city’s temples providing a glimmer of interest.
– The drawbacks: It felt crowded and a bit rough around the edges, and I found the public transit options limited. Tuk-tuks and songthaews didn’t feel safe to me. While the street food and affordability were appealing, they weren’t enough to warrant a return trip for my tastes. A week there was more than enough.
2) Penang, Malaysia
– What stood out: Exceptional food and a notable temple that added cultural depth.
– The drawbacks: The island’s appeal doesn’t extend far, in my opinion. The beach and water quality were merely average, and the island itself isn’t particularly large. A stay of about three days would likely have sufficed.
3) Montevideo and Uruguay in general
– What stood out: A calm pace compared with nearby cities and a chance to experience a different South American vibe after Buenos Aires.
– The drawbacks: The city had a lot of graffiti and visible homelessness, and public transport relied mainly on buses. The overall vibe struck me as a bit dull, and three days felt excessive. A day trip to Colonia provided some highlights, but the longer bus ride back to Montevideo wasn’t compelling enough to prompt a revisit.
Takeaways
– Travel preferences vary: A destination can be rich in culture, food, or scenery, yet still not align with what you’re seeking on a return trip.
– Balance of highlights vs. drawbacks: Interesting temples or cuisine can shine, but if other factors (safety, transport, pace, or environmental quality) don’t match your ideal travel experience, it’s natural to move on.
– How long to stay matters: A longer stay doesn’t always convert into a desire to return; sometimes a shorter, more focused itinerary is better.
