Direct Flight Alone or Longer Route with a Friend: Which Would You Choose for a 3-Week Korea Trip?

Update: A friendly note of thanks to everyone who shared insights. The logistical wrinkle was international: she’s Danish and I’m Dutch, starting from different countries. Fortunately, she found a connecting flight to Amsterdam so she can join the Korean Air journey, giving me the best of both worlds—an efficient direct flight and the chance to travel together. It’s a win-win, and I’m thrilled to have company on the trip!

Original dilemma
I’m planning a three-week stay in South Korea this April and I’m weighing two flight options:

  • Option 1: Fly directly from Amsterdam to Seoul with Korean Air, traveling solo. Pros: most convenient schedule and time-saving. Cons: one fewer day in Korea.
  • Option 2: Fly with Finnair via Helsinki, traveling with a friend who’s starting from Denmark. Pros: we arrive together, potential social and practical perks of traveling as a pair. Cons: the journey is approximately five hours longer each way.

Cost is essentially the same for both options.

What would you choose: a direct flight solo, or a longer route with a travel companion? Do you have a preference between Korean Air and Finnair regarding economy comfort, service, and overall experience?

Your personal preference would be greatly appreciated.
