Gorilla trekking beyond the gorillas: Karisimbi hike, Nyungwe chimps, and birdwatching in Rwanda.

Gorillas and Beyond: Karisimbi, Nyungwe Chimps, and Birdwatching in Rwanda

While Rwanda is famous for its gorilla trekking, a few extra days can unlock a wealth of unforgettable experiences. Based near Volcanoes National Park, I’ve outlined the add-ons I’d recommend most for a well-rounded Rwanda itinerary.

Karisimbi Volcano Hike (Two days, starting from Musanze)

  • About: Karisimbi is the highest volcano in the Virunga range, standing around 4,500 meters. It offers a challenging, two-day trek with a night of camping near the summit.
  • Who it’s for: Hikers seeking a tougher alternative to a gorilla trek and the rewards of high-altitude scenery.
  • Practical tips:
  • Permits: Non-refundable. Confirm your dates before purchasing.
  • Porters: Arranged at the trailhead through the porters’ association; pre-booking isn’t required. Hire one—even fit hikers benefit from the help with altitude and cold night temps.
  • Gear: Expect freezing temperatures; pack accordingly.

Chimpanzee Tracking in Nyungwe National Park

  • Location and wildlife: Nyungwe National Park in the southwest is home to chimpanzees (distinct from Bwindi, which is a common mix-up with chimps in mind). The forest is a pristine montane rainforest, and chimp tracking typically begins early in the morning.
  • Experience: Sighting chimpanzees isn’t guaranteed, but the forest setting and opportunities to learn about primate behavior make the effort worthwhile. Don’t miss the canopy walkway for an elevated perspective on the rainforest canopy.

Birdwatching in Nyungwe

  • Why it’s special: Nyungwe is one of Central Africa’s premier birding destinations, hosting numerous Albertine Rift endemics.
  • Rough budgeting: A ballpark estimate is a 3-day birding permit around $200 in total, with a guide costing about $40 per day. Rates can vary, so verify current prices when planning.

Putting it together: Suggested itinerary

  • Start in Kigali, travel to Musanze for gorilla trekking (and the option to add Karisimbi if desired).
  • From Musanze, head to Nyungwe National Park for chimp tracking and birdwatching.
  • Plan for a minimum of two nights in Nyungwe to avoid a rushed schedule, given the park’s distance from Musanze.
  • Return to Kigali at the end of the trip.

If you have questions about permits, fitness requirements, the best season for hiking or birding, or budgeting details, I’m glad to help. If you’ve already tried any of these experiences, I’d love to hear what you’d add to the list.
