North Macedonia vs. Moldova vs Montenegro: A Weekend Stop on a Turkmenistan Trip

Planning an itinerary that pairs with a milestone journey to Turkmenistan (my 100th country) leaves me with 3–4 open days before a final connection. I’m flying through Istanbul, so all three options are logistically viable: North Macedonia, Moldova, or Montenegro.

The dilemma

  • North Macedonia: Skopje with a potential side trip to Ohrid
  • Moldova: Chișinău, with a still-debated stop in Tiraspol
  • Montenegro: Kotor Bay and the surrounding area

What I’m after

  • A destination that feels less touristy and not overly pricey
  • A lively nightlife scene for a weekend visit (around October 23)
  • Insights on how each place feels for solo travelers
