Spent two weeks in Portugal this summer (Lisbon, Lagos, and Alentejo coast)
Portugal Revisited: A Coastal Road-Trip Through Lisbon, Lagos, and the Alentejo Coast
Embarking on a two-week exploration of Portugal with my partner, we set out to discover the capital’s charm, the Algarve’s coastline, and the lesser-visited lanes between them. Renting a car allowed us to linger in smaller towns along the Atlantic and experience the country from a more intimate vantage point.
Lisbon: A City of Hills, Hues, and Hidden Cafés
Lisbon surprised us with its vibrant energy, striking architecture, and walkable neighborhoods. Though the city’s hills challenged our legs, the walkable layout rewarded us with frequent discoveries. For those who need a reliable workspace while traveling, The VENUE provided a fast WiFi connection and a productive atmosphere—an excellent option for remote work without sacrificing city vibes.
The Algarve: Crowded Beaches versus Quiet Corners
In the southern stretch, Lagos offered breathtaking viewpoints at Ponta da Piedade. However, the more popular beaches felt crowded, prompting us to seek quieter shores. Salema stood out as a serene alternative: a beautiful beach, a relaxed pace, and a charming café scene. Solecci delivered a standout cortado, making it a perfect mid-day stop to recharge.
The Alentejo Coast: Unexpected Delights and Slower Pace
Vila Nova de Milfontes emerged as one of the trip’s most pleasant surprises. The town exuded a laid-back feel, and Laréu Cafetaria earned praise as having some of the best coffee we encountered on the trip. The entire Alentejo coast impressed with its calm atmosphere, offering a refreshing counterpoint to the busier resort towns.
Dolphins and Atlantic Adventure: A Marine Highlight
One afternoon, we joined a small RIB boat tour to witness dolphins in their natural Atlantic habitat. With a marine biologist onboard, the experience was both educational and exhilarating—the dolphins swam close to the vessel, making the trip a memorable highlight.
Would We Return? Absolutely
We’re already envisioning a longer stay along the Alentejo coast, planning to deepen our exploration of the region’s towns, beaches, and hidden cafés. If you’re considering a similar itinerary, I’m glad to share more details or answer questions about routes, lodging, and timing.
