Where to spend 2 remaining nights in California coast road trip

Title: Where to Spend 2 Unplanned Nights on a California Coast Road Trip

Planning a California coast road trip to celebrate my husband’s 40th birthday in November. Here’s our current itinerary:

  • Fly into San Francisco (SFO) for 2 nights
  • Stay with a friend in Watsonville (1 night)
  • Morro Bay (1 night)
  • Two unplanned nights
  • Los Angeles for 1 night
  • Fly home

For the two unplanned nights, we’re considering Santa Barbara or Santa Monica. Are there other quintessential California coast spots we should consider? We’d prefer to stay in one place for both nights since we’ll be doing a lot of driving and following the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH). My husband’s birthday falls on the sixth day of the trip, and we’d like to minimize driving that day.

What we’re hoping for
– Wine and cocktails, great food
– Easy, enjoyable activities: beach walks, leisurely bike rides, light hiking, exploring local shops
– Not big on art or history; we’re open to a bit of it but not the focus
– A relaxed vibe with a mix of upscale dining and a few laid-back spots
– We’re flexible on budget and are comfortable splurging a bit for the right experience

Context and preferences
– Driving a substantial portion of the PCH is a bucket-list item for both of us. We expect long drives and plan around them, with no strict schedule and minimal toddler-related constraints, as we’re traveling child-free for this trip.
– We’ll fly into SFO and depart from LAX. Our flights are non-refundable, but most hotels offer free cancellation up to a date, so we can adjust if needed.
– We’re easygoing and enjoy lounging on a patio, poolside, or beachside, with a mix of fine dining, cocktails, casual meals, and the occasional live music or dive bar.

If you have recommendations for the two unplanned nights, I’d love to hear your suggestions for a single, standout stay that fits our vibe. Consider locations that offer great food and drinks, easy coastal walks or bike-friendly areas, scenic views, and a relaxed but not overly touristy atmosphere. Also, if there are alternative itineraries that minimize driving on the birthday day while still delivering a quintessential California coast experience, I’m all ears.
