Prague + Dresden OR Strasbourg + Colmar? A week in mid-December Christmas markets and more? Need help deciding!
Prague + Dresden or Strasbourg + Colmar? Choosing a Week in December for Europe’s Christmas Markets
Planning a 7-day trip, with the possibility of extending to 10–11 days, focused on Europe’s Christmas markets in mid-December. I’m torn between two popular city pairs and would love some guidance.
Option A: Prague and Dresden
Option B: Strasbourg and Colmar
Context and preferences:
– Vibe: Maximum Christmas cheer, delicious food and drinks, and picturesque medieval or storybook scenery.
– Budget considerations: Car rental versus public transport; potential for additional Czech destinations if I choose Prague/Dresden.
– Optional extensions: A few days in Paris if Option B is chosen (I’ve visited Paris before).
Questions for travelers who have visited either pair (or both):
1) Which pair felt more magical for Christmas? Alsace (Strasbourg/Colmar) is famous for extravagant holiday decor, but Prague’s Gothic architecture, snow, and lights also seem magical. How do they compare in reality?
2) Food and beverages: Vin chaud (hot mulled wine) and tarte flambée vs. svařák (mulled wine), trdelník, German bratwurst, and stollen. Which pair offers a more satisfying festive food and drink experience?
3) Crowds: How manageable are mid-December crowds on weekdays versus weekends for each destination? Any tips for avoiding bottlenecks or long lines?
I’d appreciate experiences, recommendations, or a balanced breakdown of pros and cons for each option. Thanks in advance for your insights!
