Where is good to go to in Africa, long-time seasoned traveler, but very little in Africa
Where to Visit in Africa: A Seasoned Traveller’s Curated Wishlist for a Month-Long Journey in 2027
As a long-time traveler who’s explored much of South America, Asia, Europe, and beyond, I’m turning attention to Africa for an extended, month-long exploration in 2027. My preference is for places that feel a bit off the beaten path, with a focus on culture, history, and people rather than mass-scale safaris. I’ve already spent time in South Africa and am curious about several other African destinations. Below are the countries that most pique my interest, along with what draws me to them and what I’d be hoping to learn or experience there. I’d also welcome recommendations from anyone who has visited these places or has other excellent suggestions.
Countries of particular interest
-
Namibia: Renowned for dramatic landscapes and a touch of German colonial heritage. I’m drawn to the geologic wonders, desertscapes, and the possibility of meaningful cultural encounters beyond the usual tourist routes.
-
Angola: Intriguing due to strong cultural connections I’ve encountered in Brazil and the broader Lusophone world. I’m curious about its music, art, cities, and the evolving post-conflict culture.
-
Cameroon: Often described as “Africa in Miniature” because of its diverse ecosystems and ethnic groups. The country promises a rich tapestry of landscapes, languages, and traditions, plus a vibrant urban scene in Yaoundé and Douala.
-
Ethiopia: A storied destination with an intense culinary scene, a mosaic of ethnic groups, and a deep Christian heritage. I’m mindful of current events and would plan carefully, prioritizing safety and up-to-date guidance.
-
Comoros: A unique archipelago of tropical, predominantly Muslim islands, with volcanic terrain and a distinctive blend of African and Arab-influenced culture. The isolation and small-scale societies offer a rare travel experience.
-
Algeria: Home to remarkable Roman ruins, the striking capital Algiers, and a flavorful culinary scene. It’s a country I’d like to approach with patience and a willingness to engage with history and contemporary life.
-
Ghana: Often highlighted as one of West Africa’s more developed and hospitable destinations, with a reputation as a gentle introduction to the region. I’m interested in its modern culture, music, and history.
-
Benin: Noted for its spiritual and cultural traditions, including voodoo heritage, and a fascinating crossroads of histories. I’d approach Benin with an openness to ritual sites and contemporary cultural expressions.
What I’m not prioritizing
-
Egypt, Morocco, and Tanzania (including Zanzibar) aren’t high on my list at the moment.
-
I’m not seeking traditional safaris as a primary interest, though I do appreciate diverse birdlife and would welcome experiences where nature intersects with culture in unique or spectacular ways.
A few questions for fellow travelers
-
For those who have visited any of the countries above, what itineraries worked well for a month-long trip? Which places surprised you in a positive way?
-
Are there “off-the-beaten-path” cultural experiences, markets, music scenes, or community-led projects you’d recommend?
-
Given that I’m prioritizing culture over nature (unless the nature is truly exceptional), what city-to-city routes or regional hubs would you suggest to maximize immersion?
-
Any safety tips or current travel advisories I should be aware of before planning a multi-country loop in 2027?
I’m excited to hear from anyone who has experience with these destinations or other Africa-focused recommendations. If you’ve found a country particularly rewarding for a traveler with a broad scope of interest, I’d love to hear why and how you allocated time within a month-long itinerary.
