I tweaked my roadtrip itinerary a little. Do you guys think this is doable/fun for December (3 weeks)? Otherwise my spouse was suggesting going to Mexico City/Oaxaca instead.

Roadtrip Reimagined: A December Adventure Across Beaches, Forests, Mountains, and Deserts

A few weeks before year’s end, I tweaked my roadtrip plan and I’m curious about its feasibility and enjoyment level for a three-week December journey. My spouse and I, along with our dog, hope to embark on a diverse route that features a mix of coastal beaches, snowy forests, rugged mountains, and expansive deserts. It feels like a fun and vibrant itinerary for the last stretch of December, totaling about 72 hours of driving spread across three weeks.

Alternative: Mexico City and Oaxaca

My partner suggested an entirely different option: fly to Mexico City and then Oaxaca, which could be cheaper and more practical from Brownsville, TX. While road tripping has its appeal, flying would reduce travel time and potentially lower overall costs.

What I’m seeking

  • Feasibility: Is a three-week, multi-biome roadtrip realistic and enjoyable in December, given driving times, weather, and seasonal considerations?
  • Highlights: Which destinations across beaches, snowy forests, mountains, and deserts would provide a balanced and memorable experience?
  • Practical tips: Pet-friendly lodging, winter road safety, and any must-see stops that align with a December route.
  • Cost vs. convenience: A quick comparison of staying stateside via road trips versus flying to Mexico City/Oaxaca from Brownsville.

If you’ve planned a similar December journey or have insights into combining coastal, high-altitude, and desert regions within a single trip (or a feasible alternative like the Mexico City/Oaxaca option), I’d love to hear your recommendations and any caveats.
